STATISTICAL LITERACY AROUND THE WORLD IS POOR

Statisticians in Canada have abundant access and training in statistical methods and research. This is not the case for inquiring minds in developing countries.

There are so few people trained in research methods in developing countries that only 3% of scientic publications come from these countries. In addition, about 80% of all research is rejected. Much of this is because of poor access to research methodologies, training, stunted access to materials and professionals or due to an aversion or fear of research design and statistics.
The result is research and ideas fail to thrive.

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE

In addressing global statistical literacy concerns, the Research Methods Library of Alexandria (RMLA) was established. It’s mission is to be a World Centre for Research in Statistics and Statistical Methods across disciplines such as psychology, biology, chemistry, history , physics, sociology, etc; a central research methods library for all of science.

Currently, the RMLA is the largest library dedicated to research methods and statistics containing thousands of pieces of reference material and course content – all contributed freely, to be accessed by anyone with an internet connection. The RMLA is endorsed by ASA, RSS and IBS.

Statisticians from around the world are donating and sending in statistics books to the RMLA to be rehomed, catalogued and used by the next generation of inquiring minds.

An Ancient Library inspires the Future

The original ancient library of Alexandria, founded in 288 B.C., housed hundreds of thousands of scrolls by some of the finest intellectuals and writers of the ancient world. Scientists, mathematicians, and writers came to Alexandria from all cultures to learn, collaborate, and create new knowledge.

TAKE PART IN THIS CANADIAN INITIATIVE

Send in some of your Stats Books and help strengthen statistical analysis globally.

  • Look at your personal library for statistics and research methods books that can be donated.
  • Ask colleagues, employers and librarians about donating used texts.
  • If you are published, then talk to your publisher to see if they will donate copies of your textbook(s).

All those who send stats books will be added to the roster of donors. In addition, each book will contain a nameplate noting the donor’s name.

In part a heritage project, your generosity honours the sharing of knowledge and your book donations will live on in the library in Alexandria for many generations to come.
